The Daadras Foundation launched the Salam Project in November 2023, a new educational initiative aimed at equipping underprivileged children with critical thinking skills, digital literacy, and the confidence to engage with the wider world. Highlights from its first week were shared on November 6.
In its opening week, the project introduced children to two unlikely but powerful tools: computers and chess. Both were chosen deliberately. Computers open pathways to knowledge and future employment, while chess develops strategic thinking, patience, and the ability to plan ahead, skills that serve children far beyond the classroom.
The response from the children was described as inspiring. Many encountered both the computer and the chessboard for the first time, approaching each with curiosity and enthusiasm.
Sustaining the weekly sessions requires consistent volunteer support. Volunteers do not need to be experts; they need only a willingness to sit with a child, guide them through a lesson, and show up the following week. Daadras emphasised that volunteering with the project is a sustained commitment, as the children benefit most from consistency and reliability in the adults around them.
Those interested were invited to reach out through Daadras's social media channels.
